The Irwell Medical Practice Patient Participation Group (PPG) is a group of patients registered with a GP Practice who have no medical training but have an interest in the services provided.

The aim of a PPG is to represent patients’ views and cross barriers, embracing diversity and to work in partnership with the practice to improve common understanding of the services that a practice offers and help improve those services for all.

In practice, PPGs can play a number of roles, including:Irwell Medical Practice

  • Advising the practice on the patient perspective
  • Organising health and well being events
  • Communicating with the wider patient body
  • Running volunteer services and support groups to meet local needs
  • Carrying out research into the views of those who use the practice (and their carers)
  • Influencing the practice or the wider NHS to improve commissioning
  • Fundraising to improve the services provided by the practice

There is no set way in which a PPG works the aims and work of each group entirely depends on local needs but their main aim is making sure that their practice puts the patient, and improving health, at the heart of everything the group does.

In Bacup the Irwell Medical Practice PPG meets quarterly, the meetings are informal and include sharing information and talks from representatives and groups that could benefit patients. The volunteers also help at the annual flu clinics, complete surveys, talk to patients and help at training sessions.

Are you a patient from Irwell Medical Practice? If so we are looking for volunteers of all ages who are interested in making the views of the patients known and want to help continually improve the services at the practice. All you need is some enthusiasm and a few hours to spare over the year. Or if you would rather not attend meetings but still want to be involved, why not join our Virtual Patient Participation Group instead?  Members will be sent the minutes of the meetings and short surveys from time to time. You will be contacted via post or email the PPG will try to keep the questions to a minimum so it won’t take up too much of your time.

If you are interested in joining either the Irwell Medical Practice PPG or wish to pass on some comments or suggestions please contact the PPG via email irwellppg@gmail.com or post in the suggestion box at the practice.
