Smile is a not-for-profit organisation which provides a mediation service, helping people to resolve conflicts and disputes within their communities, at home or in the workplace.
Mediation is when an independent and impartial third party helps people in a dispute to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. You can find out more about the mediation process on the Smile website: www.smilemediation.co.uk/mediation
Smile is a limited company, with charitable status. We are run by a small number of staff and are supported by a team of experienced volunteer mediators trained to the standard required by the College of Mediators
The service grew out of a Government initiative to look into housing problems which were blighting the Burnley and Coventry areas. The demand for our services increased when the 2002 Homelessness Act compelled local authorities to make mediation available to homeless young people or those at risk of becoming homeless.
Smile went from strength-to-strength, constantly developing its range of its services. As well as supporting people in East Lancashire, our reach has gradually spread across the whole county, into Greater Manchester, parts of Yorkshire and beyond.
A growing reputation for high quality services enabled Smile to reach the point where it is now self-funding.
