The Doals’ Community Centre is a multi-purpose building established for the benefit of everyone in its local community of Weir, near Bacup, Lancashire on the site of the former Doals Baptist Church.
The Doals’ Centre opened in September 2008, following five years of fund-raising by Weir Community Partnership (WCP), the charity established by local people to set up and operate the centre.
The £700,000 needed to build the centre was secured from a number of sources, including Bacup & Stacksteads SRB, the North West Baptist Association, the Baptist Strategic Building Fund and Weir Baptist Church. In addition WCP was the overall winner of the 2005 WRG Village Hall & Community Centre Challenge, run by Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd, owners of the nearby Deerplay Quarry. This award recognized that Weir was a growing village with hardly any amenities, no Church building, only one small shop and two pubs! Winning the award of £250,000 gave us money to match with other funding to build the Doals Centre.
